Blog Post #2 - Why College?

In life, we all have choices to make and a huge one for me was choosing to attend college.  College is not for everyone, but I knew if I wanted to go far in life, be successful, and have a job that I love, I must attend college.  There are pros and cons of attending college so I will list my reasons.

First off, it is expected in my family that I go to college.  My dad attended DePaul University and received his bachelor’s degree.  He is an accountant at Northwest Community Hospital so he makes good money to support his family.  My mom, on the other hand, went to Harper College and only received her associate’s degree.  She is still very successful, but does not make as much money.  Once I am finished with college, I hope to have my bachelor’s degree, if not higher, because I want to be able to have a family and I need to have money to support them.

Another reason is because of the salary.  According to The Learning Network in the New York Times, college is a luxury item.  Many of the service-industry jobs are available to people without a college education and are less financially rewarding.  About 25% of people in 2010 did not attend college.  The most these people can make is roughly $39,000.  In my opinion, I do not think this is too much.  I would like to make more for my spouse, family, and myself.

By going to college I would receive a better education.  I never want to sell myself short in life.  With a college education, there are so many job opportunities that I would have.  As of right now, I do not know what I want to do in life so going to college for 4 years will give me some time to decide.

Independence is also a huge factor in going to college.  When teenagers live at home their whole life they do not know how to do things without mommy and daddy being there.  It gives us a real opportunity of growing up.  I wanted that because my parents do not give me everything, but they are a huge help in my life.  It is time that I learn to do things completely on my own and become an adult.

College correspondingly teaches us how to financially support ourselves.  Our parents usually give us money when we need it, but what happens when they are not there?  We need to learn to balance our money.  Sometimes we may not have an income so we need to be smart with saving.  I can already say from personal experience that I watch what I spend way more now than when I was at home.

Lastly, I chose college for the experience.  College should be a fun place where we meet people, receive a better education, and grow into a new person.  It is supposed to be some of the greatest years of our life so why not have a blast.

College may not be for everyone, but I see a lot of positives from attending college.  I know this is the beginning of a long, exciting life and college is going to shape me into a successful, determined, hardworking person.

  1. This was a very thorough elaboration of the topic. Very good job. I was actually interested in your writing the whole time, so good job keeping the reader's attention. Not many people know why they are in college and they just show up because they think they should, but you seem very knowlegable with the lygistics of college and that will probably help you get out of college much more quickly than Joe Bob that is here just because. Very good over all Samantha!

  2. I agree with your post one hundred percent. I like the fact that you have so many different reasons that you chose college rather than just one or two. You can tell from your writing that you really want to be here rather than just going to college so you can move out of your parents house, even though I do totally agree that college is a wonderful stepping stone between being a high school student who is totally dependent on his or her parents and an adult who has to completely take care of his or herself. It really is a good point in transition so that a young adult can mature and become independent rather than just being forced into it. Overall your essay was wonderful!

  3. I agree with you about being very successful in life and attending college to do so. It not only important to me but my family. Going to college, you do get a further education, like you said, there are so many job offers for someone with a college degree than just a diploma. You have such great reasons on way you attend college and they are very similar to mine. I have to agree with all you have to say about college.

  4. Everything you said makes complete sense. Everyone hopes to be successful in life at one point, but only those who actually pursue it are truly successful. I life how your parents expect you to go to college and be successful and I expect myself to go to college and my parents to support my decisions. It's weird how things work out. That being said, you have a lot of great reasons for going to school.

  5. All of your points were very true in my opinion! I agree with it all. Just like you it was pretty much a given that i was going to college, in my mind I had no choice due to how my parents had raised me. I was glad to read when you said you never want to sell yourself short in life because i couldn't agree more! I feel like too many people these days just take the easy road or try to cheat their way to success when the only real road to success is through hard work in any situation. Yes, college will be tough and challenging in many ways for each and every one of us who attend but when it's all over with years down the road it will open up many more opportunities and also i believe it will be a foundation of confidence and accomplishment in our lives and we will be grateful for it.

  6. I agree with you on all points! If you want ot have a successful job that you dont have to live paycheck to paycheck in our economy you have to have a college degree. Also i believe that college teaches you how to manage money just as much as you do, because when you live at home you never notice the small things that you have but when your out on your own they cost money just enjoy simple comforts. The college experiance is something that no one needs to miss, between all the new people you meet and the connections you make that could last you the rest of your life it is just amazing. i think you did great in explaining your reason for attending college and i want to wish you good luck.
